optimus prime

OP is the son of Gunner and 22 years old.  He is a gorgeous dun and has a beautiful mane that covers his eyes.  He is so closely bonded to his father it is impossible to see them apart.  They walk very closely to each other at all times.  The morning we went to pick up the four mustangs from Equine Outreach he was not keen to jump into the trailer but I whispered in his ear that he was going to a very good place and he seemed convinced as he soon jumped in for his freedom ride.

OP was born in captivity so really has never known anything other than small dirt pens but now he roams the land of Skydog Oregon with his family and is enjoying his newfound freedom.  He is very friendly and gentle.   This family is an example of the huge spate of breeders that grew up at one time for the Kiger breed.  The Kigers are very distinctive as they have the dun factor and are mainly duns or grullas.  They usually have a dorsal stripe down their back, striping on their legs and a two colored mane.  At one point the Kiger herd had a 100 percent adoption rate from the BLM as they just became very desirable and sought after and many unscrupulous breeders bought themselves a stud and a couple of mares and bred hundreds of these horses, even more so after the Disney movie Spirit Stallion of Cimarron.  People were claiming they had horses related to the real life Spirit and one breeder we know of said he produced over 700 horses and was making so much money off the sudden craze to own a Kiger.  We see over breeding as one of the biggest scourges for the amount of unwanted horses we are currently facing and hope eventually legislation is introduced to limit the amount of new horses being bred for profit.

Overall message

These are just a few of the Mustangs we have brought to the ranch, there are so many more that need a safe environment to live in.

Check back soon and meet other rescued horses and please donate to help us save more mustangs.  Over 150,000 American horses are shipped to Mexico and Canada every year and killed in the most inhumane and brutal painful way imaginable - stop the slaughter by lobbying your congressmen to Pass The SAFE ACT......
