SKYDOG OREGON COME MUCK IN ...... BUT NO MORE VISITORS
Skydog Ranch Oregon is open for volunteers BUT is not open to the public and drop by's are NOT PERMITTED. We are NOT open for tours, and visits are by appointment only to donors, residential volunteers or Patrons. Sadly due to the number of scheduled visitors getting lost and us spending hours waiting for them or trying to find them, no further regular visits can be accommodated moving forward.
Please do not drive to the ranch without making contact with the manager as you won't be able to get in as there is a locked gate to keep our staff and horses safe and secure. Please understand that every hour someone is showing interested people around is an hour taken away from our horses and is no longer financially viable for us.
If you can come help us out at our location in Oregon we are an hour from Bend, Prineville and Redmond near the reservoir.
We offer residential volunteer stays at our Oregon ranch BUT please come prepared to help out and work hard. We are a working ranch and our amazing staff put in long hard days and appreciate your help.
Please expect to do a lot of mucking, cleaning, helping out and to be available to do all chores. We offer a beautiful cabin to stay in but no food is provided and you are self sufficient in that regard. There is no payment for coming to volunteer or gas allowance so it is not for the faint hearted. If you come to help you are doing that entirely for the horses and to aid our staff.
We want you to be fully prepared for what you can expect. The residential and volunteer program is suspended during the winter months when the weather closes in and makes driving out to the remote location difficult.
Rules for residential stays for the cabin include NO PETS, NO SMOKING, NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. and are limited to one week - except for people from outside the US during the summer.
At the present time we sadly have NO weekly volunteer slots available but will be open for visitors on select Saturday mornings for two hours between 9-11 am. If you are interested in coming to Skydog Malibu to meet the horses and find out more about our volunteer program please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and put your name on the list. Spaces are limited and will be on a first come first serve basis.
All other new volunteers will be put on a waiting list for a slot in the future when we have one available. Right now our volunteer program in Malibu is over subscribed and we are backlogged in answering requests so please be patient.
Skydog Malibu is closed between the hours of 11-2 daily for quiet time for the horses and the staff who work here. Please respect that time and regular volunteers need to be off property by 11.
HERE are some details which are the same for all three ranches:
Volunteers need to be over the age of 18
Volunteers need to have at least 3 years of experience with horses to volunteer. Our horses are often wild and unpredictable and for liability reasons we only take volunteers who have advanced experience with horses.
Wear work clothes. Boots are very important and no flip flops or soft tennis shoes allowed. If a horse has ever stood on your foot you will know why. Jeans and t-shirts are best or cotton shirt as it is often hot in Malibu and Mariposa.
Bring sunscreen, water, snacks and food if you are going to be with us through a mealtime.
You will be asked to sign a waiver located below at any facility to interact with the horses.
Please make sure you are in good physical health to come and volunteer at Skydog as it is very physical.
MUCKING horse pens, corrals or stalls. This involves using a muck rake to pick up horse poop and place it in plastic buckets.
CLEANING water troughs, buckets (and spring boxes in Oregon)
SWEEPING the barn, TIDYING tack sheds, SORTING supplies, cleaning fridges, mucking stalls and checking fences
FEED horses early morning and afternoon - we do expect residential volunteers to help out at all feeding times
WATER horses - making sure all water buckets and troughs are ALWAYS clean and full of fresh water
If you are experienced with horses you can also:
WASH horses and clean their manes and tails
GROOM horses that need more contact with people to show them how kind and loving people CAN be.
SOCIAL MEDIA When taking selfies or photographs of the horses please use the tag @skydogsanctuary on Instagram or Twitter and #mustangsanctuary #passthesafeact #rescuedhorses #volunteerskydogranch are all good to use to help the rescue.
Please note Skydog Sanctuary is also a sanctuary from negativity and drama.
Please leave your troubles at the gate and give your co-workers and fellow volunteers the same kindness, respect and compassion that you do the horses here. In a world that is increasingly negative we ask that there be no back biting, gossiping, character assassination or meanness. We want to get back to practicing being loving and tolerant and so encourage a community that truly is a sanctuary in the purest form of the word.
Our culture is one of love, peace and compassion and we work hard to keep our energy positive.
If you are interested in volunteering please complete the following forms :
** You must complete the volunteer release form in order to volunteer on the ranch along with a Copy of Valid photo ID.
SADLY ALL OF THESE NEW GUIDELINES HAVE HAD TO BE INTRODUCED DUE TO THE ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF TIME BEING WASTED BY PEOPLE COMING TO OUR SANCTUARY JUST TO LOOK AND GETTING LOST ON THE WAY CAUSING NO END OF MESSAGES, CALLS AND EMAILS TO OUR STAFF AS PEOPLE SEEM UNABLE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.
OUR HORSES ARE NOT ZOO ANIMALS AND WE DON’T WANT THEIR PEACE AND WILDNESS DISTURBED UNLESS FOR A VERY GOOD REASON THAT BENEFITS THEM OR OUR MISSION OF RESCUING MORE HORSES. VISITING SKYDOG RANCH IS A SACRED PRIVILEGE TO SHARE SPACE WITH OUR EQUINE RESIDENTS AND HAS TO BE VERY STRICTLY LIMITED.
If you have filled out the form for volunteering we'll get back to you as soon as humanly possible and thanks for your offer to help!
