ONYX

So it’s unusual for us to have taken two sets of four mares, but we’re thankful we did and got to meet Onyx in the process! The BLM four and this four being saved from a kill pen after their adopter took the thousand dollar incentive money and then sold them to slaughter. We know for sure Onyx the black mare is pregnant and the others likely are too. They have been so enjoying the good food and care and space they are on. Exploring but sticking close to each other, it’s a tragedy what these beautiful girls have been through since being rounded up from the wild. Different herds, different states, but bonded by the experience of being in the slaughter pipeline, being trucked from adopter to auction, from auction to kill pen, from there to quarantine and now home finally, in a place they can rest and decompress.

Due to the babies we won’t be taking as many horses this year and we all need a more peaceful year to catch our breaths and catch up. We have been running full speed for years now and saving all we could but we hope this year to enjoy and appreciate the saves we have made, get to know babies, run more fencing for horses next year and focus on some projects we haven’t had enough time for when we have been busy saving and rescuing.

The need for sanctuary will always be there and we are glad to see so many springing up and taking some of the many horses in need. We have a massive responsibility to the ones we have already saved to make sure they continue to get the very best of care without us spreading ourselves too thin. And let you guys get to know them all and go back to introducing the ones you don’t know yet. Mustangs and Burros Need Your Help

In addition to supporting our work by donating, becoming a patron on Patreon, or sponsoring a Skydog, there are several important pieces of legislation to protect American equines currently moving through Congress. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Rep and Senators and urge them to support these bills:

Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 3475 in the House / S.2307 in the Senate). This bill will shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.

The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 3656) This bill will prohibit the use of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft in the management of wild mustangs and burros on public lands, and require a report on humane alternatives to current management practices.

Ejiao Act of 2023 (H.R. 6021). To ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
