Elliot & Wren
Wren is a palomino mare born in 2018 in the Coyote Lake/Alvord-Tule Springs HMA in Oregon. She was rounded up on Halloween of 2021, so she was three when she lost her family and freedom.
We were contacted about her by someone from a Texas kill pen, who had picked her up. They said she was almost completely blind, pacing anxiously, and shaking with fear. A kill pen is utterly terrifying for a blind horse and I'm grateful to the lot for sending her to me immediately without even posting about her. We love our blind and visually impaired horses and can give them the very best care possible. Wren will live a happy, good life like Dollar, Blue Moon, Rosa, and Lacey.
Elliot was born in 2021 in Stewart Creek Wyoming and looks like a liver chestnut paint. He was sold as sale authority in March 2025, so he was dumped very quickly. We were looking to help another mustang who could be a comforting travel companion for Wren. This year, we are focused on helping wild horses from Oregon and Wyoming as herds in those states are being wiped out by the Bureau or Land Management. We had not been planning to save two kill pen mustangs that week, but it all fell into place for Elliot and Wren, thanks to our generous donors!
Wren calmed down in the presence of Elliot on their last long haul to an unknown destination. She surprised us by being the first to jump out of the trailer when they arrived at Skydog. She stayed close to Elliot, whose confidence quickly grew as he took the lead exploring their spacious, new surroundings.
Janelle trimmed Wren’s long feet, cleaned her eyes, and doctored the cuts on her face. The girls were so gentle nudging her into the chute and softly talking to her so she always knew where they were. The vet checked her eye and confirmed that she does have some vision. We decided to place her with Lacey, who lost one eye, Blossom, and Mr. Parker. This is a gentle band where Wren easily found new friends, who don’t push her off her food.
We moved Elliot in with the new Wild Boys - Emerson, Lennon, and Wild Boy. We feel certain this is the right placement for this youngster and look forward to releasing them together onto open spaces to live wild and free.

American Mustangs and Burros Need Your Help
In addition to supporting our work by donating, becoming a patron on Patreon, or sponsoring a Skydog, there are several important pieces of legislation to protect American equines currently moving through Congress. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Rep and Senators and urge them to support these bills:
Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2025 (H.R.1661 in the House and S.775 in the Senate). This bill would amend the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly known as the “Farm Bill”. There are several important provisions for animals in that omnibus federal law, including the Cat and Dog Meat Trade Prohibition Act. It is currently illegal to slaughter, transport, possess, purchase, sell, or donate dogs and cats, or their parts, for human consumption. The SAFE Act would extend the ban to equines and shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.
You can Contact Members of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121, submitting contact forms on their individual websites, or sending one email to all three simultaneously at www.democracy.io
See our How to Help menu for other actions to ban zebra hunting at US canned hunt ranches and stop production of Premarin & other PMU drugs.
Bills from the previous 118th Congress that we hope will be introduced again this year:
The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 3656) This bill will prohibit the use of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft in the management of wild mustangs and burros on public lands, and require a report on humane alternatives to current management practices.
Ejiao Act of 2023 (H.R. 6021). To ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
