Giving Tuesday 2019

We took Misty in with Patrón on Giving Tuesday 2019. Her happiness is the result of the persistence and determination, of incredible people who go above and beyond for the mustangs they love. We were asked about taking her more than any other mare over the years. We made suggestions of things to try with her, but she couldn't be trained or tamed.  Her owner never gave up on her, never threw her away. When nothing worked, it was a no brainer to bring her to Skydog. She’s exactly the kind of horse that needs sanctuary.

The moment we turned her out had been a long time coming for this mustang who was terrified by everything that happened to her. We could tell she’d been through an enormous amount of horrific trauma. She was not quick to trust and was explosive when worried. Horses are always talking, if you listen. This mare was screaming for space to be left alone with other horses far from humans beings.

We introduced her to Champ’s herd, but had to bring her back in. She just wasn't accepted and had taken to running with the wild donkeys out there! Next, we introduced her to Chief and Badger. She fell in love with him and Badger doted upon her. When they had settled in, we let them out with Bear’s herd, where Misty wasn’t accepted by the mares. Just like her human, she never gave up. No matter how many times they ran her off, she came right back. Today, she ranks in the center of this band and is loved by all. We don’t see her up close very often and that’s just fine. It makes us happy that she’s so happy being wild and free.

Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2025 (H.R.1661 in the House and S.775 in the Senate). This bill would amend the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly known as the “Farm Bill”. There are several important provisions for animals in that omnibus federal law, including the Cat and Dog Meat Trade Prohibition Act. It is currently illegal to slaughter, transport, possess, purchase, sell, or donate dogs and cats, or their parts, for human consumption. The SAFE Act would extend the ban to equines and shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.

The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 4356) The bill would eliminate the use of helicopters in rounding up wild horses and burros, and require a study into alternative methods for humanely gathering the animals.

Ejiao Act of 2025 (H.R. 5544). To ​​ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
