Slate

We saved Slate along with three other mustangs from the slaughter pipeline. They went to our fellow Oregon rescue 3 Sisters Equine Refuge to be trained and homed. The other three have all done wonderfully. Slate had all the time and every chance in the world to choose his future. He had enough training to know that domestic life is not for him - and that's fine. We agreed at the time that if it didn't work out, we would take any or all of them in to our sanctuary.

Slate arrived yesterdav and went straight into the elk barn to settle. He was a little jumpy, so we brought him a friend, Wilson. Named for our dear friend Scott @photoadvocacy Wilson, he was in the barn for a little cancer on his chest. When that healed, he was ready to go back out. Wilson is a little low on the hierarchy in his herd,  but Slate immediately decided he was the bees knees and was thrilled to have him as his mentor.  It such an adorable meeting.

Slate is 9 years old and he's from the Shawave Mountains herd in Nevada, the same HMA as Pony Boy and Coyote. The horses from that herd seem a little diminutive, but they're all heart.

We are incredibly grateful to 3 Sisters. We love working with other great rescues for the good of the wild ones. If you check them out, they are also doing phenomenal work fundraising for animals displaced and in need from the fire on the Warm Springs reservation in Oregon.

Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2025 (H.R.1661 in the House and S.775 in the Senate). This bill would amend the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, commonly known as the “Farm Bill”. There are several important provisions for animals in that omnibus federal law, including the Cat and Dog Meat Trade Prohibition Act. It is currently illegal to slaughter, transport, possess, purchase, sell, or donate dogs and cats, or their parts, for human consumption. The SAFE Act would extend the ban to equines and shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.

The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 4356) The bill would eliminate the use of helicopters in rounding up wild horses and burros, and require a study into alternative methods for humanely gathering the animals.

Ejiao Act of 2025 (H.R. 5544). To ​​ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
